Martin Rigg

Age: 37

Sex: male

Date: 22 May 2019

Place: Convent Walk, West Street, Sheffield

Martin Rigg was hit by a tram in West Street, Sheffield near Convent Walk shortly before 10.30pm on Wednesday 22 May 2019.

He had suffered severe head injuries.

Two people, both brothers, were arrested. They were later released under investigation but both themselves later died, with one of them hanging himself whilst in prison on a separate matter.

He was hit by the tram on 22 May but died a few days later in hospital in the early hours of Sunday 26 May 2019 at the Northern General Hospital. His head had hit the windscreen of the tram, causing severe head injuries.

He had been seen arguing with two men shortly before. He was said to have just taken £10 out of a cash machine after which he got into an argument with the two men. CCTV footage showed one of the brothers lunging for Martin Rigg's pocket, causing him to step back into the path of the tram. It was said then that after Martin Rigg was hit by the tram that the man took the £10 from him.

The tram had been travelling out of the city centre towards the University tram stop, just by Piccolo's restaurant in Convent Walk.

Martin Rigg's inquest later ruled that he had been unlawfully killed.

A detective said, 'From the CCTV, it’s clear the first brother was the main perpetrator and the second brother was following on. The first brother will never face prosecution for this matter as he is now deceased'.

It was heard that the first brother had a number of previous convictions and that he was shortly after imprisoned on a separate unrelated offence and that whilst in prison, on 29 June 2019, he hung himself.

It is not clear how the second brother died.

The narrative conclusion at the inquest in 2020 stated, 'Shortly after 10pm on May 22, 2019, Martin Rigg became involved in an altercation with two other males on West Street, Sheffield, in view of and the same side of the road as Piccolo's restaurant. A tram was approaching, travelling from the town centre towards the University of Sheffield. Mr Rigg was confronted by one of the two males who reached for Mr Rigg’s pocket, him having just drawn £10 from a cash machine. Mr Rigg took two steps backwards, the second step bringing him into contact with the approaching tram. His head struck the left side of the tram's windscreen causing a severe head injury which led to Mr Rigg’s death at the Northern General Hospital on May 26, 2019. The male who had confronted Mr Rigg removed a £10 note from Mr Rigg's pocket after the collision before the arrival of the emergency services'.

Martin Rigg had been a steelworker and had lived in Plover Court, Sheffield.
